More die in bathtubs than in terrorism. Is it still worth spending billions to fight it?
More Americans die from accidents in the bathtubs than from attacks by terrorists. Should we then care so much more — and spend so much more — to prevent terrorist attacks than bathtub mishaps?
It was a disturbing story: Seventy Four-year-old Loretta Rose electrocuted by her suction grab bar, falling in her bath tub in July.
“The suction is supposed to be super strong and the green lighting up feature is reassurance that it is properly installed and ready to be used.”
Her family told Inside Edition she regularly used her grab bar to prevent her from slipping while soaking in the tub.
“I still haven’t recovered from my PTSD,” her caregiver, Katie Owens, told Inside Edition. “I went in to tell Loretta that it was time to get out so we could go to bed, so I called her name and she didn’t answer.”
They found Loretta in the tub. Her caregiver and daughter, both medical professionals, performed CPR in an attempt to revive her. But it was too late.
The Inconvenience
There are many problems with the present designs of bathtubs and showers. These products are outdated and they fail to meet the physical needs of the aging population.
Adaptive fixtures and equipment are “Band-Aid” solution to complex problems not satisfied by conventional showers and tubs.
Bathtubs today conform only to the functional capabilities and physical needs of young, able-bodied individuals, and place considerable physical and mental demands on the elderly, the children and those with disabilities.
Bathtubs and showers do not meet the changing needs of people. They are not responsive to adaptation as people’s functional capabilities and physical conditions undergo age-related changes. But there is hope.
The Magnitude of the problem
Bathtub related deaths in the recent years have exceeded those due to handgun accidents, all forms of road vehicles accidents (excluding motor vehicles), ladders and scaffolding falls, and ignition of clothing.
Because bathtub related deaths occur suddenly and in a supposedly protective environment, these deaths tend to cause a greater degree of psychological trauma for American families.
According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.6 million older adults seek emergency care each year for fall-related injuries, fractures or head trauma.
In addition to potentially losing their independence, seniors 65 years old and up have a 25 percent chance of dying within six months to a year if they fall and break a hip.
There are preventative steps to help you and your loved ones change that statistic, and bathroom modification programs can help reduce the chances of injury.
If your zip code qualifies, the Medicare Advantage Credit will pay for your bathtub
Thanks to a little-known government program called the Medicare Advantage Plan, middle class homeowners in specific zip codes are getting $1,000’s in tax credits and rebates to install bathtubs usually for $0 out of their own pocket.

Millions of Americans who would love a new walk in tub don’t realize the government will pay to install your bathtub. Millions of Americans actually qualify for free installations and don’t even know it.
How Does it Work?
The government would like as many people as possible to switch to walk-in tubs. Here’s why: a walk-in tub is now considered a medical necessity. In April of 2018, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the expansion of health related supplemental benefits through Medicare Advantage (MA) plans.
The service (or, in this case, item) can be utilized to prevent, diagnose, or treat a disease or injury, make up for physical injuries/weaknesses, better the functional and/or psychological effect of physical/health issues, or assist in reducing the need for emergency care. Based on this provided guidance, it is understood that some MA plans will pay for the cost of walk in tubs.

The problem is that the cost of installations are expensive so in order to get more Americans to modify their environments to make them safer, the U.S. Government is quietly giving away free bath tubs to middle class families.
This allows homeowners like you to finally build a home that’s more accommodating to your health, usually for $0 down. The U.S. government will help you afford the bath tub with generous tax credits, rebates and incentives. It’s a serious score for homeowners because now the value of your home will increase and you will save thousands of dollars on your home modifications throughout the year.

The Time To Act Is Right Now
You probably haven’t heard about this program before because just like so many tax breaks and incentives, it’s just put out there with little fanfare and only the insiders take advantage of these incentives.
